Now that summer is here, you will likely be jetting off on holiday abroad, taking some time off work or planning a whole host of activities here in the UK. If you are planning on going away in the next couple of weeks, we have a few home security tips that we’d advise you to follow to ensure the safety of your home this summer.
Lock ALL Doors
It’s natural for you to lock your doors every day when you go to work or heading out to the shops, but what about when you are at home sunbathing in the garden, with loud music on or with friends and family talking? Would you know if someone had come into your home, stole something swiftly and left? Probably not. In which case, it’s a wise idea to lock your doors even when you are at home, if you think you might not hear or see a burglar.
Remember, criminals are clever, opportunists that will bide their time and wait for the perfect moment to rob you or steal your most valuable possessions. Be safe and lock your doors!
Secure Your Windows
Just like your doors, you should take extra care to secure all of your windows in the summer months. Although the temperatures outside might be scorching, you should be careful not to leave windows open when nobody is home. This is an open invitation for burglars to enter your home when nobody is there. Even cracking the windows slightly can be a risk as a burglar could still open it with a little added force.
Going out? Close all of your windows. It’s as simple as that!
Going on Holiday?
If you are planning a summer holiday this year or are set to embark on your next adventure, you should take extra care to make sure your home is secure. Here’s a few tips to ensure your home is completely safe when you are away, so you don’t come home to nothing:
- Install timer switches that will alternate through different parts of your home at different times. The ever-changing lights will give the impression that people are still residing in the property.
- If you have someone delivering your milk, don’t forget to cancel it. A collection of milk bottles at your front door would indicate to a burglar that no one is home and that everything inside could be theirs!
- If you have a burglar alarm, turn it on. If you don’t have one, consider buying one before you go. Smart cameras are another thing that you could consider. Most modern security cameras can be linked to an app on your phone, which you could look at to check your home whilst you are away.
- Ask a trusted friend or family member to open and close your curtains each day or even house-sit. This way your home will look like it is still in use and that no one is away on holiday.
- Have the locks changed if you suspect you are worried about your home security. Your local locksmith will also advise you about other security measures you can take to protect your home while you are away.
So there you have it. A few helpful tips that will help you to keep your home secure this summer. Whether you are going away or not, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
